Philip Howell Banta, age 74, of Auburn, passed peacefully from this earth on August 25, 2015. He was born November 25, 1940 near Huntertown, Indiana to the late Maurice and Sara (Howell) Banta of Kendallville. Phil graduated from Avilla High School in 1958 and then attended Purdue University where he earned a Highway Technician Certificate. He worked for the Northern Indiana Fuel and Light Company as well as Diversified Utilities. After moving to Florida, Phil worked for the LPA Group where he was a Senior Project Manager until his retirement in 2011. In 1961, he married Jeannette (Alwood) Banta of Auburn and they celebrated 50 years of marriage before she passed away in 2011. In 2012, he married Sheila (Goff) Dean-Banta of Springfield, Ohio who preceded him in death in 2015.

Phil loved cars and could often be seen tinkering with his own car or admiring classic cars, especially ’57 Fords. He had an endless supply of stories from his youth; some of which he wrote for a column in the Avilla newspaper. Phil was an active member of the Westside Christian Church, Bradenton, Florida and Auburn Church of Christ, Auburn, Indiana. Over the course of his life, he led several youth and adult church groups. He enjoyed watching westerns and considered “Shane” his favorite movie. Phil believed any problem could be solved over a cup of coffee and a piece of pie. Most of all, Phil loved being a father and grandfather. He often said that his children and grandchildren were his greatest accomplishments. Our fondest memories of Phil will always be his quick wit, bad puns, hearty laugh, his love of family and his love of God.

He is survived by his son, Eric (Beverly) Banta of Ellenton, Florida; daughter, Lisanne (Colonel John, USAF, Ret) Migyanko of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania; step-son, Kevan Dean of Mansfield, Ohio; sister Carol (Wayne) Detwiler of Greensfork, Indiana; and grandsons Anthony (Nicole) Banta, Nicholas Banta, John Banta, Matthew Banta, Cameron Banta and John Migyanko IV. Phil is also survived by many other loving family members and friends.

Visitation will be Tuesday, September 8, 2015 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m at Hite Funeral Home, 403 S Main Street in Kendallville. Visitation will also take place Wednesday an hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
