Born June 26, 1931, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Robert Colon and Nannie Frye Kanipe.
He was retired from the City of Hickory as the assistant street superintendent and was a very faithful member of his beloved church, New Hope Baptist in Hickory.
Surviving him are his four godchildren, Debbie Setzer Denton and husband Phil Denton of Greensboro, Robert "Rick" Setzer of Hickory, Lisa Setzer Doucette and husband Dean Doucette of Hickory, and Lynn Setzer Parlier and husband Jeff Parlier of Knoxville, Tennessee, and their children Adam Doucette, Jordan Doucette, Aaron Parlier and Benjamin Parlier. He is also survived by one sister, Nancy Kanipe Smithey, her husband Cecil Smithey, four nephews Chris Smithey and wife Angie, Craig Smithey and wife Tina, Curt Smithey and wife Susan, and Cory Smithey and wife Heather, and three nieces Rene Meredith, Darlene Phillips, and Tami Defenderfer.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Josephine Teague Kanipe, goddaughter Kennette Teague Dotson, and his sister Drucilla Herman.
