Will was the oldest child of Rev. John Patterson and Lucy Clementine Bradshaw Humphreys. After graduation from Roberts Business College in Bowie, Texas on July 12, 1905, he was employed in Archer City and Wharton, Texas until 1915 when he went to Amarillo. There he was bookkeeper for Waples-Platter Wholesale Grocery Co. and later became a partner with M. D. Young in a furniture store.

On May 15, 1927, he was married to Alpha Gladys Kilgore in Hereford. They lived in Amarillo a short time, coming to Tulia in September 1928. He was employed in the abstract office of J. E. Swepston.

In 1933, with a typewriter and a 10 cent package of index cards, he started building an abstract plant of his own, copying instruments from records in the Swisher County Clerk's office. In 1934 he rented an office over K. Ramsey's Furniture Store; and having previously obtained an abstractor's license, made his first abstract from the Guaranty Abstract Company soon after. He maintained this business until 1962 when he sold it and retired.

Will and Gladys were the parents of three children: Zoe Evelyn (marr. Roy Maxell Smith), Anna Ruth (married Ward Byrd Benson, Jr.), and William Howard (marr. Anna Jeanne Troxell).
