Bernard J. Derry
Bernard J. Derry, 79, Hot Springs, Ark., formerly of Astoria, died at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, at St. Joseph Hospital, Hot Springs.
He was born Oct. 6, 1925 in Woodland Twp., Fulton Co., the son of Newton and Pearl (Gould) Derry. He married Avis Darlene Fisk, Sept. 14, 1947, in Astoria. She survives.
He is also survived by one son, Dr. Greg (Susan) Derry, Canton; one daughter Kathy (Ron) Hayes, Morton; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Brillhart, Astoria, and Fern Conner, Turlock, Calif.; and two stepsisters, Flossie Danner, and Nelda Herriford, both of Macomb.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Ben, Willis, Vernon, Otis and Donald Derry; one sister, Darlene Waggoner; and one stepbrother, Jack Parr.* (Also stepbrother Dean Parr and stepsister Wanda Averill.)
He was a veteran of the United States Marines, World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. He farmed in the Fulton county area for years.
He retired as a warehouse manager from Hobart Welders, East Peoria, and he worked for New Concept Dental Lab in Canton for several years in public relations and as a driver for the lab.
He was a member of the Summum Christian Church where he was a former Elder.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, at the Shawgo Memorial Home, Astoria, with Steve Castaneda and Gary Sheets officiating.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2205, at the Shawgo Memorial Home, Astoria.
Burial will be at the Astoria Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army's South Fulton Red Kettle Campaign.
