Her obituary in the Morganton, NC News-Herald 2 Oct 1919:
"A gloom was cast over our entire community last Friday when it was learned that Mrs. W. L. Allen had passed into the great beyond. Mrs. Allen had been in feeble health for several years and although her death was expected at almost any time, it was a shock. She was apparently improved and able to go to her daughter's for a visit. While there she bruised her hand and gangrene set in, which quickly brought the end. She was before her marriage Miss Emeline Williams, and was 78 years and five months old. Four sons had preceded the mother into eternity, the oldest child and infant, Messrs. Lewis, Lee, and Augustus, of Opelika, Alabama. Four daughters, the husband, and a large number of grandchildren and two great grandchildren survive. The daughters are Mrs. Mary --- and Mrs. Isadora Mull, of Washington State, and Mrs. P.S. Kincaid and Mrs. Frank Ross of this State. Mrs. Allen was a good woman and we have every reason to believe she passed into rest. When dying she spoke of flying and the end came as if she had only fallen asleep. She will be greatly missed by not only her relatives, but a host of friends. Her remains were laid to rest in Mountain Grove cemetery on Saturday afternoon in the presence of a large crowd that gave proof of the high esteem in which she was held. Rev. J. B. Tabor conducted the services."
