"Shorland Evans played football for Box Elder High School in Brigham City, Utah. It had been a lifelong dream of his.
During his team's practice game on the afternoon of Monday, 22 October 1928, Shorland sustained internal injuries during a play. He died the next day, Tuesday, 23 October 1928.

"His was the first ever death among high school players who died from their football injuries. (Ironically, Shorland's uncle, Thomas Evans, who also hailed from Brigham, was the first ever college football player to die from football injuries. Their deaths came twenty years apart, almost to the day, in 1908 and 1928.)

"Box Elder High School students attended as one body, given Shorland's involvement in several school activities. He was President of the student body during his first year of high school. In his second year, Shorland was a student body officer and 'Yellmaster'. This year, he had been a member of the first football squad and the Engineers' club, along with being an active member of the Box Elder High band.

"Left to cherish his memory were his parents, John R. and Nellie Evans, and his sisters, Blythe Evans and Winnifred Maude Evans.

"Shorland was laid to rest in the Brigham City cemetery following funeral services held in his honor at 2 P.M., on Saturday afternoon, 27 October 1928, in the Box Elder Stake Tabernacle. Bishop E. M. Tyson, of the Sixth Ward conducted the funeral service.

"His beloved Box Elder High erected the headstone in his honor.
