Laurence "Larry" Stone
Nov. 30, 1912-July 30, 2000

Laurence C. Stone, 87, of San Diego died July 30. He was born in Jersey City, N.J. Mr. Stone was retired after working as a proof planner, and belonged to College Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara G. Stone; son, Rod L. Stone; one sister; and two brothers.

When Larry was 16 years old, his father disappeared.. His mother was left with herself and seven children to care for and feed, so Larry got a job working in a grocery warehouse to help support his family. Later, he was employed at a gas station and planned to open his own station with a friend. But, his brother Harold talked the family into moving out West with him to California.

In California, he met a beautiful young woman at a skating rink. Her name was Barbara Shyrock. She was quite a skater and he was impressed! They met often at the skating rink where he taught her to skate backwards. Larry began to attend her church instead of his own. He would drive his mother to church and then go to her church. Eventually, she and Larry were engaged and married on February 21, 1943. They became the enthusiastic proud parents of one son named Rodney Laurence. He was the apple of their eye and pride and joy of Grandma Stone.
Larry was very close to all his siblings. He was a brother you could depend on. When his brother Bill's wife was diagnosed with cancer, Larry and Barbara would go over and spend hours just talking and walking with them.

Larry enjoyed music and was a gifted talented musician. He enjoyed many good times leading and playing in a senior gospel band from College Avenue Baptist Church. They entertained at many of the senior events. He was a kind hearted man who was greatly loved by his wife Barbara, son Rodney, siblings and nieces and nephews. He left a legacy of love, honor and trustworthiness that all can look up to.
