Rufus George Cook was the son of George Henry Cook and Sallie "Sarah" Casselman. He married Martha Smith in Jones CO, Iowa on 90 July 1871. He later married Amanda C. Darling and Rosa Jane Mason. Rufus and Martha had 3 children: Mary Alice "Emma" Cook, Lulu Margaret, and Adam Leroy.

Rufus served in the Civil War in CO H, 31st Iowa Infantry with his brothers, John William and Ira Jacob.

Rufus, his father, and brothers, Ira, Levi, and Adam, migrated to Harvey CO, KS to homestead in the early 1870's. He later moved to Dodge City, KS and was a Justice of the Peace, and U.S. Commissioner during the "cowtown" days. He presided over the trial of Ed Masterson's murderers.
