He attended St. Brigid grade school, St. Agatha High School and John Carroll University. He was employed with the Erie Lackawanna Railroad as a fireman and then went on to work for Hughson Chemical in Saegertown, which later became known as LORD Corp. He started out in production, was promoted to traffic manager and then moved to the Erie Corporate offices as logistics manager for all of LORD Corp. He retired in June of 2014.

He was a member of St. Agatha Roman Catholic Parish, where he served as a lector and catechist of religious education.

In Joe's free time, he enjoyed vacationing with family, golfing, but most of all spending time with his two grandsons, Ryan and Jordan. He even went into business with Ryan this year.
