Major Robert Abernathy served as a pilot with the 4th Air Commando Squadron, 6250th Combat Support Group, 13th Air Force flying out of Tan Son Nhut AB, RVN. On 17 December 1967, he was serving as a copilot aboard an AC-47D (# 43-49492), on a courier flight between Tan Son Nhut AB and Phan Rang AB, RVN. Apparently, the aircraft was struck by groundfire during its night time flight. The wreckage was located on 23 December 1967 and the bodies of the crew and passengers on board the aircraft were recovered 23 December 1965 (A crew of 4).
MILITARY- Killed in action at the age of 37 years old.
