Sidney Eugene Gilliam, 82, of Newberry died Sunday, August 9, 2015 at his residence. Born on July 23, 1933, in Pomaria, he was a son of the late James Newton and Annie Bell Bishop Gilliam. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and retired from Morehead Oil Company. He was an active member of Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School , was Secretary/Treasurer for the Men's Club, and was a Lay Speaker. He was a former President of the Sertoma Club and was active with the R.S.V.P. He is survived by his wife, Helen Carpenter Gilliam; 4 stepchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; and 12 step-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers, James O. Gilliam, Clyde Gilliam, Carroll Gilliam, Duane Gilliam, Ray Gilliam, and Virgil Gilliam; and a sister, Helen Kibler. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jimmy Counts and the Rev. James Gilliam. Burial will follow in Newberry Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to Lewis Memorial United Methodist Church, 1105 First Street, Newberry, SC 29108, The Newberry County Council on Aging, 1300 Hunt Street, Newberry, SC 29108 or to Palmetto Health Hospice, PO Box 352, Newberry, SC 29108. Active pallbearers will be Travis Gilliam, Larry Gilliam, Ernest Gilliam, Kevin Gilliam, Forest Kibler, David Kibler, and Marion Livingston.
