Funeral services for A.D. "Son" Darden, 66, were held Saturday, March 23, 2002, from Macedonia Baptist Church, the Rev.
Kenneth Darden pastor, with the Rev. Amos Horton officiating. Interment, with military honors, followed in New Hope Cemetery in Goodrich.

A wake service was held Friday, March 22, from Forest Lawn Baptist Church in Houston, the Rev. R.C. Bell pastor.

Mr. Darden died on March 18.

He was born on March 31, 1935 in Goodrich, the son of the late Willie and Malissia Darden. He was raised by his grandparents, the late Drew and Ada Wood.

He joined Macedonia Baptist Church at an early age under the leadership of the Rev. John Henry Williams. He graduated from Dunbar High School in Livingston, then furthered his education by attending Paul Quinn University. Mr. Darden retired from IMCO after a 26-year career and was employed by Assess Plus Inc. at the time of his death. He also served in the United States Air Force, receiving an honorable discharge in 1959. An all-around sports person, he played football in both high school and in the Air Force. He was a member of the Dunbar Leopards championship football team of 1953-54. In 1968, he met and married the former Bernice Harrison.

He was preceded in death by one son, Andre Dwayne Darden; daughter, Sharon Thomas; his parents; sister, Dorothy Faye Charles; two brothers, Arvan Darden and John Milton Price and stepfather, the Rev. V.L. Price Sr.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Bernice Darden of Houston; son, André Donyel Darden; three daughters, Mario Lanza Darden, Jacqueline Edward and husband Allen of Houston and Stephanie Evans and husband Freddie of Livingston; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Lorraine Darden Paxton of Livingston and Theodell Darden Criswell of Houston; brother, Velton Price Jr. and wife Joyce of Livingston; goddaughter, Sylvia Darden Ingram of Houston; mother-in-law, Jettie Harrison of Point Blank; sisters-in-law, Alma Darden, Jean Rawls and husband Luther, and Dorothy Hines and husband Kenneth, all of Houston, and adopted sister-in-law, Silverta Davenport; brothers-in-law, Ray Harrison and wife Debra, Henry Harrison and wife Lenola and Charles Harrison, all of Houston, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were the Rev. Anthony Darden, Arnold Darden, Wayne Horton, Freddie Evans Jr., Ronnie Darden, the Rev. Mi-chael Darden and Allen Edward. Honorary pallbearers were André D. Darden, Raymond Criswell, Velton Price Jr., James Hayes Sr., Curtis Criswell, John Terry, the Rev. Charles Horton, Lawrence Walker Jr., Johnny Walker and the Dunbar Leopards Championship football team of 1953-54.

Charles Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
