In 1854 they moved to Kent County, Michigan, where Leonard obtained eighty acres of heavily timbered land under a soldier's claim. At that time he had $300, $175 of which was used to pay for the land. They lived on the remainder until he erected a one room log cabin, all made out of rough material and put up with ax and auger. The family occupied this log cabin until about 1880 when a frame house was built.
The family spoke German even after moving to the United States and were members of what became the German Methodist Church of West Lowell. The Methodist class was first held in their house. Margaret Mack Behler had converted to the German Methodist Church while living in Ohio. Leonard died 18 September 1897 at his farm near Lowell, Michigan. Anna Margarete Mack Behler died there 19 April 1907.
