Joseph was one of nine children.
In 1887 his parents came to Detroit and settled on the lower west side. The had left Strakonic, Bohemia, (present day Czech), looking for a better place to live.
Joseph's father died in an accident when Joseph was 7. Mary kept the family together. She moved a few blocks west from the Williams street home to 4007 33rd street. That remained the central Carda home for many decades.
As a young boy Joe loved baseball and he'd often skip school to play ball. The 3rd time he skipped school a Truant officer came over to check. His mother said he went to school, "I saw him going out the door". So when he skipped school. again. The Truant officer came to the home. Mary said, he was too big for her to whip. She asked the Truant officer to stay for supper and talk to Joe. He got a promise from Joe that he would attend school.
Later he went off barn-storming and wrote home asking if they'd have a party with a ham & all the trimmings if he came home. When he came home he sat Mary in a chair, blindfolded her and dumped a satchel of $1 dollar bills in her apron. He said, "Now am I too big to spank?"
Joe's love for baseball continued. He played semi-pro ball (3rd base) with the Clowns barnstorming for 18 years. After quitting baseball Joe opened up a pool hall near the family home on Michigan avenue. For 7 years he was a switchman for the Central Railroad in Detroit. His last employer was Ford Motor where he was a supervisor in the Export department.
On 18 Jun 1918 at St Francis Church in Detroit, MI Joseph married Anna Bernadine Fladzinski. The couple had two children, Norbert & Delores (Dixon). For year the couple lived on Sparta ave & Junction in Detroit.
Joseph was a member of Holy Redeemer Church.
For many years Joe and his brother raised pigeons. They competed in events and won many medals & prize money. Sometime after he retired (at age 65) he had a stroke and was confined to a wheel chair.
Anna his wife of 32 years died in 1950 leaving Joseph a widower til he died 24 years later. Anna is buried at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. Joseph is buried with his brother George & son Norbert.
