C Company, 37th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Airborne), 20th Engineer Brigade (Combat) (Airborne Corps), out of Fort Bragg, NC

He joined the military, the National Guard, while in high school at age 16 and went to Ft Leonard Wood, MO, at age 17. He would have been able to retire from the US Army in two and a half years and was up for a promotion when he returned from Afghanistan. He was due for a two-week leave in October and would have completed his tour of duty. He died as a result of shrapnel wounds suffered on July 20, 2006, while he was coordinating a response to a mortar and possible rocket-propelled grenade attack. Among his military awards and decorations were the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster; Purple Heart; Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster; Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster; Army Achievment Medal with two Silver Clusters; Joint Meritorious Unit Award; Army Superior Unit Award; Good Conduct Medal [5]; National Defense Service Medal [2]; Armed Forces Expiditionary Medal; Southwest Asia Service Medal with Bronze Service Star; Kosovo Campaign Medal; Humanitarian Service Medal; Noncommissioned Officer Professional Develpment Ribbon [3]; Army Service Riboon; Overseas Service Ribbon; Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia); Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait); NATO Medal; Global War On Terrorism Expiditionary Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Global War On Terrorism Service Medal; Drill Sergeant Badge; Combat Action Badge; Senior Parachutist Badge; Air Assault Badge; Sapper Tab; the Bronze Order of the DeFluery Medal; and a meber of the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club.

He was predeceased by his father, Allison Christopher Rafferty; and a brother, Matthew Rafferty. He was survived by his mother and her husband; his wife of 15 years; two daughters; two sisters; two nephews; and his grandmother.

Interment on August 4, 2006.
