On August 2, 2015, Wendell Ellison Adams (Dad) embarked on the most adventurous roundup of his dreams. He was transcended to the greatest mountain top on high. Dad began his journey on June 17, 1918, in Layton, Utah, born to the parents of Jabez S. and Alice E. Adams. Dad spent his school years in Layton. He attended Davis High School and while there, among other awards, he was given an award for the student that was involved in the most clubs and after school activities. This commitment to learn, to excel, to participate, and to contribute has been found in every facet of his life. From Davis High School he attended the University of Utah where he received his bachelor’s degree in business. After graduation, he accepted a scholarship to the Stanford University MBA program. He graduated with honors in June of 1941. During his years at Stanford, a life changing event occurred. In his last year of graduate school, he met his future partner for life, Ramona Shepherd. Dad and Mom were married on December 26, 1941, in Layton, UT. They went back to California where they both worked at Kaiser Shipyard. Dad returned to Layton to recuperate from a serious sledding accident. While recuperating, he had the opportunity to become the Personnel Manager at ZCMI Dept. Store. From there he was made Vice President of ZCMI. A 40+ year career he was truly proud of.

Dad was an active member of the LDS Church. He held many leadership positions and always cherished the many, many friendships over his lifetime.

Dad was a successful executive by profession…but a true cowboy at heart. Dad grew up with horses his entire life. He raised, bred, trained and had a real passion for his many quarter horses. He enjoyed riding his horses with his children, on the Pony Express route, and on many “a roundups” with great friends. Dad loved open country, tack shops, the rustling of aspen leaves, the smell of pine trees and well-worn leather. He loved his search of unique cowboy boots, western jewelry and leather goods

Of all his many great accomplishments, the one that mattered most to him, was his family. Dad and Mom were married 73 years. They had 8 children, Graig (deceased), Stanley (Arlene), John (deceased) (Judy), Ann Bradshaw (Dee), Douglas (Jody), Richard (Susan), Wendy Mendenhall, and Kathryn Sidwell (Jeff). They have 44 grand and great grandchildren of whom he loved and took such pride in each and every one. Dad was preceded in death by his wife, parents, 2 sons, Graig and John, 2 sisters, Helen and Cleone and his youngest brother David.

Dad never missed a chance to get to know others…..He could not walk into a room…. and then walk out, without making a friend. Dad was the epitome of true service to others.

Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.
