He served as a medic in the U.S. Navy obtaining the rank of 2nd Class Petty Officer. During the Vietnam War he received a Navy Commendation Medal with Combat 'V' for a heroic accomplishment during an enemy attack in December of 1970.Kirksville Daily Express, December 12, 2012:
Lance M. Clarke, 68, of La Plata, formerly of Quincy, IL died Saturday (Dec. 8, 2012) in University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia. Lance was born Oct. 9, 1944, in Tampa, FL. He was the son of Myron "Red" and Frances A. Kieffer Clarke. He married Donna S. Phillips on Sept. 16, 1967 in Quincy. They later divorced. He served as a medic in the U.S. Navy obtaining the rank of 2nd Class Petty Officer. During the Vietnam War he received a Navy Commendation Medal with Combat 'V' for a heroic accomplishment during an enemy attack in December of 1970. After military service, Lance worked as a LPN in various facilities until his retirement. He was quite the history buff and loved to share that knowledge with family and friends. He was a long time very loyal and avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. Survivors include a son, Brian Clarke and his wife, Michele of Quincy; three grandchildren, Samantha Clarke of Houston, TX, Harrison and Danica Clarke of Quincy; a sister, Carla Cantrell of St. Cloud, MN and numerous other relatives and friends.
Lance was preceded in death by his parents. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial gathering of family and friends will be held on Monday, Dec. 17 from 6-8pm at the Salvation Army Kroc Center in Quincy. Memorial donations can be made to Lance's grandchildren's education funds or a charity of donor's choice.
