DIES IN SLEEP
RITEES TUESDAY FOR VETERAN IN PUBLIC SERVICE
F. Y. Barnes, 78 year old veteran in public service died in his sleep about 10:30 p.m. Saturday at his home while, which occurred after an attack this summer. He had been at the justice office in the court house Friday.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Congregational Church. The county courthouse will be closed at the time to permit Mr. Barnes fellow workers to attend the services.
Dear closed a public service career of 21 years, in which Mr. Barnes served 8 full terms as clerk of the district court and 5 years as justice of the peace for Red Oak Township.
After leaving his farm near Elliott in 1881 he was brakeman trainman and station agent for 26 years residing in Corning, Villisca coming to Red Oak in 1896.
In 1907 Mr. Barnes joined the Murphy Company, working as shipping clerk until January 1, 1919 when he stepped into the district court clerks office to begin a term of service unequalled by any except his own son, the late Henry Barnes, who had been clerk for 18 years.
Mr. Barnes was born December 3, 1863 at Montpelier, Vermont, the son of Mr. n dMrs. Henry Barnes. When he was only 6 years old, the Barnes family moved to Pottawattamie County, settling on a farm northwest of Elliott. In 1885 he was married at Corning to Carrie Smyers, who died in Red Oak in 1930.
Survivors are three sons, Charles H. Fred, and Ralph E. Barnes, all of Red Oak; two brothers, Charles Barnes of Elliott and Frank Barnes of Creston.
The Revs. Harold C. Bradshaw and O. e. Walker will be in charge of the services. Pall bearers will be Howard Copenhaver, O, F. Hallcock, L. J. Coombs, Ed Medhurst, Jack Richardson, and Harold Robinson.
Music will be furnished by Mrs. R. E. Stevens, soloist and Miss Mabelle Reimers, organist. Flower bearers will be Mrs. Frank Boll, Mrs. Robert Askey, Mrs. George Bridges, and Mrs. Charles Murphy.
Odd Fellow services will be conducted at the grave in Evergreen Cemetery.
