Joseph entered the Western Military Academy in 1902 where he remained two years. In 1904 he attended the Iowa State College at Ames, Iowa, where he pursued a course of studies to fit himself as a civil engineer. On Nov 29, 1906, while in Grand Junction, Colorado, he was accidently killed. He had entered his room which was small and not properly ventilated and had lighted a gas heater to heat water for a bath. While waiting for the water to heat, he fell asleep and was asphyxiated by the vitiated air and gas. An only child, just entering into manhood and a useful career, his death was particularly sad.
