Jeanne passed away Friday morning in Redwood Falls. The Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Jeanne Elaine Aakre was born October 17, 1949, in Fairmont, the daughter of Harold and Harriett Mildred (Taplin) Aakre. She received her education in Faribault and made Faribault her home for a number of years prior to moving to St. Peter and later to Friendship Haven in Sherburn before making her home at the C.O.R House on Lynn St. in Sherburn, where she lived for over 40 years.

Jeanne worked at MRCI in Fairmont retiring due to her illness on July 1, 2015.

In her youth, Jeanne enjoyed competing in the Special Olympics. She won two gold medals and a bronze medal in swimming at the International Games in Notre Dame in 1987, and was the winner of the Bill Sackter Award, something she was very proud of. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to crack a joke. Jeanne had an infectious smile and was rarely seen without a big smile on her face. Special occasions would bring a bigger smile to Jeanne, especially birthdays. She loved birthdays and had a great memory for other people's birthdays as well.

In her spare time, Jeanne enjoyed bowling, dancing and meeting people. She loved the outdoors and treasured time spent looking for wild flowers and watching birds.

Visits from her brother, Richard and his family brought back fond memories for Jeanne as they would quite often travel "down home" to see the family homestead by Iowa Lake. Jeanne also looked forward to shopping trips with Diane and loved to find treasures to share with her friends and family.

She was an avid fan of "Little House on the Prairie" visiting all of the towns related to the book and also attending the Little House on the Prairie Pageant.

Jeanne was a member of ARC MN and People First.

Left to cherish her memory is her brother, Richard Aakre and his wife, Diane of Redwood Falls, MN; nephew, Steven Aakre as well as many extended family and a host of friends.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Harriett Aakre; an infant sister; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
