Gladys R. Sharp was born in a small settlement named Spring Creek in Throckmorton Co., Texas (now a ghost town). She moved with the family to Dallas, Texas at some point during WWI. In about 1924 she married Johnnie Whitworth by whom she had two children. Mildred Whitworth in about 1925 and Johnnie Whitworth, Jr. on May 10, 1926. Gladys and Johnnie divorced in 1929. Johnnie died shortly after on February 5, 1930 of pneumonia.

On July 13, 1940, Gladys married Lonnie Elton Vance in McKinney, Collin County, Texas. Gladys and Elton resided in the Dallas area until his death in September 1976.
