Jimmy Dale Oliver passed away on June 28, 2013 after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was born December 12, 1943 to James E. and Virginia Higginbotham Oliver. He was raised in the Elderville Community and graduated from Longview High School in 1961. In 1966, he and Carol Hug of Longview were married. Jimmy often said that he was born a generation too late. He was a cowboy at heart and proud to be a sixth generation Texan. As a young man, Jimmy, his cousin, and close friends spent their time in the hay fields building fences and raising cows in order to earn enough money to buy better horses and to cover rodeo entrance fees. Jimmy raised everything from champion Appaloosas to cutting horses over the years and was never happier than the times he was on horseback. Jimmy was a construction electrician in the Longview area until 1976, when he went to work for Texas Utilities Generating Company in Tatum. He was a maintenance foreman until his retirement in 1999. After retirement, Jimmy and Carol became avid golfers. Not only did they enjoy our local courses, but often their vacation destinations were planned around the challenge of a new course. They visited Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada, but were always happy to return to Texas. Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Linda Oliver Edney. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, two daughters, and three grandchildren. It was his wish to be cremated with a private family service in the Oliver family plot in Centre Presbyterian Cemetery in Elderville. The family requests memorials in his honor be made to the American Lung Association, 8150 Brookriver Dr., Suite S-102, Dallas, TX 75247.
