Article from the July 6th, 1871 edition of the Quad City Times: A most terrible and shocking accident occurred at Cove Station, nine miles above Columbus City on the evening of the 28th inst. A train boy by the name of Edward Bales aged about 16 years lost his life by falling between two freight cars. As the 7 o'clock train left Conesville, the boy was noticed running along on top of the cars. When a quarter of a mile north of town he fell beneath the cars and was carried some distance and was his body was jammed in a cattle guard. He has no father nor mother living, no earthly friends to mourn his loss. He was buried on the 20th by the ticket agent and section hands, the railroad bearing the funeral expenses.
