Special Deputy Dies Suddenly

Mourice Eugene (Roy) Butler, Humboldt County sheriff's special deputy and owner of the Hub garage in Fort Seward, died Monday afternoon from a heart ailment.

Butler was born in Arkansas 36 years ago.

Humboldt Undersheriff William G. Fritz this morning expressed his department's regret on Butler's death. "Special Deputy Butler was a real asset to this office for assisting in law enforcement activities in the Fort Seward and Alderpoint area. He was law enforcement-minded and took care of many situations in the Fort Seward area, thus freeing the Alderpoint deputy for other tasks."

He ably assisted the Alderpoint deputy in preserving the peace and dignity of the people of the area. We deeply regret his passing."

Butler leaves his wife, Goldia, and two pre-school children, Stewart and Jill, all of Fort Seward; parents, Mr. and Mrs. James (Lillie) Butler; brothers, James and Charles. and sisters, June Ella Copeland, Donna Walters and Doris Trantham, all of Bakersfield.

Funeral services for Mourice Eugene (Roy) Butler will be held Thursday, May 2, at Reif's Riverwood Chapel in Garberville. Five Deputies, Weldon Black, Marvin Davis, Raymond Martin, James Boyer and Robert Walden will serve as pallbearers. Interment in the Ferndale Cemetery.
