Sam Ness, 69, Succumbs Following Heart Attack

Sam Ness, of Fairfield, passed away at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 26, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Dale, of Fairfield. Mr. Ness suffered a sudden attack of heart trouble and collapsed. Dr. Bateman, of Choteau, was sent for and arrived soon, but the stricken man breathed his last before the physician arrived.

Mr. Ness was a native of Norway and was born Sept. 2, 1866, making him 69 years, three months and 24 days old at the time of his death. When 12 years of age, he came to this country with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sjur Ness, settling in Minnesota. He came to Montana in the early 90s and in 1891 was united in marriage at Great Falls and made his home there for a number of years. About 25 years ago he homesteaded on the Fairfield bench and was one of the pioneers of that section.

There he raised his family and took a prominent part in the upbuilding of the Sun River project. Besides being a leader in community affairs, he took an active part in county matters generally and served for several years as chairman of the Teton republican central committee. His wife passed away on the 19th of last May. He was a prominent member of the Sons and Daughters of Norway.

The survivors are two sons, Henry of Choteau, and Selmer of Pocatello, Idaho; and two daughters, Mrs. Arbey Hanson and Mrs. John Dale, both of Fairfield.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Norwegian Lutheran church on the Fairfield bench. Burial was made in the church cemetery beside the remains of his wife. The funeral was largely attended and many were present from Choteau.
