Rev. Msgr. Albert J. Hayes, 72, pastor of St. John the Evangelist Church and former vice-general of the Syracuse Diocese, died Oct. 23rd at St. Joseph's Hospital of a heart ailment. Born in Syracuse, Msgr. Hayes was educated in parochial schools and at Christian Brothers Academy. He studied at Manhattan College in New York City, and at Grand Seminary, Montreal. After ordination, he was assigned as assistant pastor at St. Lucy's Church, then as pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Pompey. From 1903 to 1910 he served as pastor at St. James Church in Cazenovia, then was appointed pastor at St. Agnes Church in Utica, where he celebrated his silver jubilee in 1916. Nineteen years ago he succeeded the late Rt. Rev. Michael Clune as pastor of St. John the Evangelist Church in Syracuse.

Msgr. Hayes is survived by his sister, Mrs. Emma Langan, and by a nephew, John A. Langan, both of Syracuse; by a niece, Mrs. Katherine Adams of Chicago; and by a grand-niece, Nancy Adams of Syracuse. Funeral services were at St. John the Evangelist, where a solemn high mass of requiem was sung by Bishop Foery.
