The community was deeply pained at the announcement yesterday of the death of Oscar H Johnston, which occurred at the residence of Mr A B Symms at 4 o'clock Sunday morning.
Oscar Johnston was as brave, honest and chivalric a young man as ever adorned society. There was something about him that won to him friends, true and tried, wherever he went. He was a gentle as a woman, and little children loved him as a brother. We doubt if any young man in our city had a wider circle of acquaintances and was more generally esteemed. Oscar Johnston came to Atchison some six years ago, with Mr A B Symms, in whose employ he remained until Mr Symms went into the exclusive wholeslae business, when he found employment as a salesman in the house of Mr John Perkins. He was born in Giles county, Virginia, and has just passed his 28th birthday. He has a mother and a brother and relatives living in Virginia. He has been sick about five weeks with typhoid fever. When his condition began to cause apprehension he was removed to the residence of Mr Symms, where every kindness and attention was shown him. His own mother could not have been more kind and attentive than was Mrs Symms. His death has been anticipated for some days.
Mr Johnston was an ardent and devoted Mason, and had taken all the orders up to and including those of Knight Templar. He was buried yesterday afternoon by Washington Lodge A F & A M, T M Pierce, W M, and A D McConaughy, marshal, in the Masonic burying ground at Mt Vernon cemetery. The funeral ceremonies at the house were conducted by Rev L A Alderson, who has long been acquainted with the family and friends of the deceased. The following Knights Templar, clothed in their beautiful regalia, acted as a funeral escort: Sir J G Thayer, Sir A H Sockman, Sir Jas H Garside, Sir Jacob Lue, Sir Geo C Allen, Sir J A Bailey, Sir J N Utley, Sir C B Singleton.
After the beautiful and impressive ceremoneis of the Masonic order at the grave, Oscar H Johnston was laid away to rest forever.
