Samuel Morris Lee 'Papaw' Jones passed away in the home July 27th, 2015. He was born December 9th, 1925 to Elmer Lee Jones and Vena Clestal (Hudson) Jones in McMinnville, Tennessee. He married the love of his life, Helen Louise Trout, on February 12th, 1945. They went on to enjoy over 70 wonderful years together and were blessed with five children and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Liberty Baptist Church of Duncan at Friday, July 31, 2015, with Brother Marvin Knox officiating. Services are under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home in Duncan.

The family will visit with friends Thursday, July 30, 2015, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Sam served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His time in the Navy included serving on an aircraft carrier as well as time spent on an island in the South Pacific training soldiers for amphibious landings. After returning home, he worked as a television repairman, a machinist, and retired from Halliburton in 1983 as a Machinist and Quality Control Inspection Technician. In his retirement, Sam was always active and working hard. He spent much of his time operating J and J Machine Shop, a business he and Helen started and that still operates today.

Papaw was an avid music lover and instilled a passion for traditional bluegrass in the whole family as well as everyone around him. He was a wonderful musician and played most stringed instruments but best loved the fiddle. He also loved to sing and had a song for every occasion. He inspired many family members to follow in his footsteps playing bluegrass and sharing his passion. This led to the creation of The Bluegrass Trailblazers, a family band. Many a time he was known to gather the family for an impromptu jam session where he would play fiddle and Helen 'Mamaw' would play stand-up bass while others joined in on other instruments. He was a member of the Greater Oklahoma Bluegrass Music Society, Oklahoma Bluegrass Club, and a founder of the Southeast Oklahoma Bluegrass Society as well as a staple at bluegrass festivals all across the state. Even as he got older, Sam never let anything deter him and continued to play his music with friends at local jam sessions, nursing homes, and community events.

Proud of his time in the service, later in life he was a member of the VFW and the DAV. He also served as a judge and mayor of Kenefic, Oklahoma. Sam loved the Lord and was always active in church. He had served as a deacon and was always a Christian leader and example within his community. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church of Duncan.

He is survived by wife Helen, of the home; three sons and two daughters, Robert M. Jones and wife Shernell of Duncan, Michael Lee Jones and wife Mary of Howe, TX, Linda Treece and husband Wayne of Comanche, Randy Jones of Duncan, and Lisha Henderson and husband Joel of Foster. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and eight great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by parents, Elmer and Vena Jones; two sisters, Aline Walden and Ima Jones and great granddaughter Jenna Mills
