Leland was a US Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was a 1949 graduate of Fremont High School in Fremont, Nebraska, and an Air Traffic Controller for the FAA for 35 years at the Kansas City Control Center. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, the Northland Optimist Club, and was involved with the Boys Scouts of America for many years, where he was a member of the tribe of Mic-O- Say. On June 17, 1950, Leland married Beverly Jean. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, a son, Mitchel Welty, and son-in-law, Michael T. Brixey.
