Betty Abbott was the daughter of Anna Bruckmann & George Schraffenberger, Jr.

An edited version of the Cincinnati Country Club memorial to longtime member, Betty Abbott, was provided by DBardes (ID 47833902).

Betty Abbott's friends who gathered at the Deupree House service all agreed that her grandson, Andy Gottman, pegged her overflowing energy when he described Betty as lively as a "pistol." Her mind vital until the end, Betty died on 21 July 2015 at her home of three years, Deupree Cottages. She was 95 years old— "a trailblazer and feminist who made her own path," explained her daughter-in-law, Melissa Abbott.

An early prenatal disease specialist, Betty tackled leading-edge birth defect research (environmental factors, mercury poisoning, congenital malformation). She was an assistant to Dr. Josef Warkany (1902-1992) who founded the human genetics and developmental disorders divisions at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. After graduating from UC College of Arts & Sciences, Class of 1941, as a zoology major, she advanced her studies at the UC College of Medicine where she discovered her preference for research. She continued her involvement with Children's Hospital throughout her life, serving on the Board of Junior Co-Operative Society, after decades of sewing and needlepointing handcrafted items for their gift shop.

Betty inherited her strong German work ethic from her ancestor, Michael Schraffenberger (29 May 1831-1906) of Billigheim, Pfalz, Bavaria. Local Bruck's Beer was made by Betty's Bruckmann ancestors. Betty's husband, CCC'er Robert N. "Bob" Abbott (1915-2002), was an insurance broker. The family summered at Petosky, Michigan. She and Bob loved golfing together at CCC and around the country. Betty played bridge with a regular group who rotated hostessing among each others' homes. She was a devoted mother. Jim Matson of Dayton (Betty's nephew, son of Georgia) explained that "Aunt Liz" loved having her home filled with family so she could hear about their adventures.

Rev. Jana Reister, Knox Presbyterian Church, presided over the brief memorial service at Deupree on 24 July 2015. Betty's two aged sisters, Georgia Matson, Lincolnshire, IL and Mary Lovelace, San Jose, CA were unable to attend. Betty will be inurned in the Abbott plot, 113-11, Spring Grove Cemetery. Betty leaves two children and three grandchildren.
