He was commissioned lieutenant in the Letcher Battery, but owing to physical disability, was unable to perform field service. He married Annie Burnley Muse 16 August 1853.
A biography of Mr. Bigger is available in "Speakers and Clerks of the Virginia House of Delegates 1776-1955". Bigger was Clerk of the House for many years. His portrait hangs in the House of Delegates.

John bought Oak Forest and 127 acres from James and Pattie Tinsley in 1871. He sold it to Frances Vial in 1875.
