DEATH OF MRS. HARDY

The sudden death of Mrs. Thos. Hardy last Saturday, in the dental parlors of G.H. Kellogg, from the inhalation of chloroform, administered by Dr. Barrett, that she might have teeth extracted, is one of the saddest calamities that has ever visited this city. Coroner Simons was summonmed immediately and the verdict is as follows:

VERDICT OF THE JURY.

We, the jury empaneled and sworn in the above entitled matter find that the deceased, Mrs. Thos. J. Hardy, the person now lying here before us, came to her death after the administration of chloroform, administered to her by Dr. J.A. Barrett, who was then acting professionally as a physician. Further than this the cause of her death is unknown to us. Her death occurred about four o'clock in the afternoon of this day. We further find that all precaution was taken, and that all efforts were made in the effort to save the patient; and we consider that no blame can be laid on Dr. Barrett.

Elizabeth Hardy was born in Orleans township, Winneshiek county, Iowa, thirty-eight years ago, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Webster who survive her. She leaves four children, two sons and two daughters, the eldest a son nearly 17 years of age, the youngest a daughter of five years. She was taken to her desolated home Saturday evening where funeral services were held Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Hunett of the Congregational church of Cresco, whose words were peculiarly comforting and appropriate. The concourse of friends who attended the solemn ceremonies evidenced the love she had inspired by her gentle counsels and tender interest in all who needed help in any manner. She was one of the most active members of Ashley church ladies aid society that furnished a floral tribute for her casket, a beautiful wheel with a broken spoke; many other artistic tributes and beautiful bouquets of flowers were given by those who loved her and who will mourn and miss her genial helpful presence. All hearts throb with sympathy for the stricken husband and children in whose lives her place must be ever vacant, in whose home her loving presence must be ever longed for. As daughter, sister, friend, she was worthy of all that those tender ties in their highest terms imply. Her earthly tenement was laid to rest in Kendallville cemetery.
