In about 1846, James, Amanda,their two children, James' brother Willis and his wife joined his parents and two youngest Selman brothers in moving to Cherokee County, Texas. “Jimmy” and Amanda lived and farmed near his parents and were enumerated in the 1850 census. Only fifteen days after the census was taken, James died on November 15, 1850. Records state that he was laid to rest at the Palestine Churchyard near Alto, possibly with his parents at Selman Roark Cemetery also near Alto. A marker has not been found.
His Estate was probated in Cherokee County Book C, pp 422-424; Book D, pp 16-21, 421 & 422; Estate: Book E, p147, 192, 198, 228 and Books F, H, and J. Probate 1852, Cherokee County,Texas. Extensive probate was due to minor chidren at the time of James’ death.
James’ widow Amanda remarried to Greenlee Bean Selman, a cousin of James who was a widower with two chidren in 1851.
