George W. Yount was a stone mason, horse breeder/racer and farmer; built a stone barn on his farm north of Winfield , KS in 1881 (Cowley Co., KS ). The land, 160 acres , was purchased by George in 1 871 for $1500 after he came to KS from IN.
In 1872 George (44 yrs.) and Mary Ann (37 yrs.), with all but the 3 youngest children, left IN for KS in 2 mule- drawn wagons. They lived there for 25 years, raising wheat, corn, large fruit orchards, quarrying stone of magnesium and limestone (built Topeka, KS post office), and George W. was treasurer of local school board. The farm eventually was 400 acres in size. In 1919 the farm was sold to A. Graham. The stone barn, com pleted in 1881, still stands and is a local landmark.
George W. Yount had been previously married to Mary E. Pearcy and had at least one child: Lenorah Yount (later Bailey) who was born 10 Oct. 1851 in Oblong, IL.
