She was preceded in death by her husband, Estell Eugene Sweeten in 2009.
Hazel and Gene where married on Aug. 15, 1954. As newlyweds they lived in Long Beach, California, moving to Turlock, San Jose and Elk Grove in the mid 60s. Shortly after moving to Elk Grove they began raising Morgan horses. Although Hazel never rode herself, few things made her happier then seeing her horses in the show ring being shown, and she could always be heard cheering them on from the grandstands.
Hazel was a longtime 4-H leader in Wilton 4-H, she loved children and thought of all the 4-H members as “her kids.” When her granddaughter Melissa joined 4-H, Hazel volunteered as the sewing leader for the Standish 4-H club passing on her incredible talent as a seamstress.
Being called “G” by her granddaughter instead of Grandma, she became know as “G” to numerous children and adults alike.
After Gene passed away in 2009, Hazel joined the local Humane Society. She loved being a part of the organization and helping with the groups’ fundraisers.
It’s so hard to put someone’s life into a couple of paragraphs, but Hazel loved life, she loved people and animals and was one of the kindest people you could ever hope to know. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Truman and Ila Huddleston; and her sisters, Thelma Putman and Naomi Casteel.
Hazel is survived by her sister; her daughter and son-in-law; and her granddaughter.
Graveside Services for Hazel will be held at the Diamond Crest Cemetery, in Susanville California at 1 p.m Saturday, July 25, 2015.
