At 18 years old, James B. Hall enlisted as a Private in Co I, 3rd Arkansas Infantry, at Tulip, Arkansas under Capt. George D. Alexander, his old schoolmaster, on June 25, 1861 for the duration of the war. James joined military service along with fellow students of the Arkansas Military Institute (Est. 1850) located in Tulip. He was mustered into service at Lynchburg, Virginia on July 5, 1861. He was wounded in the Battle of Sharpsburg, Maryland (Battle of Antietam Creek) and taken prisoner by the Federal troops of the Army of the Potomac on September 17, 1862. He was given a parole from the Army of the Potomac on September 27, 1862. He died of his wounds in Samuel Bealer's (Beeler's) house near Sharpsburg (Washington County), Maryland on October 5, 1862. Confederate soldiers who were known to be buried in Washington County were finally buried in the Washington Confederate Cemetery in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown. The dedication took place June 15 1877. James was the oldest son of Hugh Pryor Hall and wife, Mary Frances Pryor Hall.
