Claude Dempsey, 61, died Tuesday night [Jan 22] in the Veterans hospital in Portland, according to word received by his sisters, Miss Frances Dempsey and Mrs. John R. Sibley. He had been taken there in November following a stroke in his hotel in Salem on November 12.

Claude was born in Polk county in September 1884, the son of James A. and Alice Dempsey, pioneer residents of the Rickreall community. His boyhood was spent in this vicinity. He served in the Unites States cavalry on the Mexican border in 1916 and went overseas during World War I where he served with the 157th infantry regiment. He had lived in Portland most of the time since returning from the service.

Mr. Dempsey had been in failing health for the past three years. He spent most of last summer here, being forced to give up his work with the state liquor control commission by ill health, and was stationed as a road watchman for the forest closure at Black Rock. He had improved sufficiently last fall to resume his work and was employed in Salem at the time he suffered a stroke.

Funeral arrangements are pending but it is thought graveside services will be held at the Dallas Odd Fellows cemetery. [Embree Cemetery]

Claude is survived by his wife, a married daughter Barbara, who resides in New York City, and five sisters, Mrs. A.H. Boyd of Tacoma, Wash; Mrs. J.N. Hart and Mrs. Cora Cobb, both of Portland, and Miss Dempsey and Mrs. Sibley of Dallas.
