8804: Dietrich Steele Sr. – pr. born ca 1705 to 1716 (son of Roelof); liv. 9 Aug 1796 (date will prepared); m. ca 1743 Gertrude Kast (b. 1727, d. Sep…) dau. of George Kast Jr. & Gertrude; m2 by ca. 1760 Margaret Wohleben. In an indenture made 4 June 1793 Frederick Kast refers to three children of his dead sister Gertrude, naming them as Rudolph, George, and Gertrude (as in “Mohawk Valley Kasts”) and Stone Arabia Reform Dutch Church records show Dietrich’s wife as Margaret for the five children bp from 1761 to 1770. Hans Derich Stally deeded German Flats lots #45-47 to Peter Remsen on 26 April 1733 and built a grist mill and sawmill on Steele’s Creek, south of the Mohawk River, where during an Indian attack he escaped capture by hiding in a sawdust pile. The Stahley Patent of 17 June 1755 granted land in the southern part of Herkimer Co. to Rudolph Stahley, Peter Bellinger, Jr., “Hans Dietrich Staley”, and others. Steele family patentees living in 1795, who signed the 1755 petition, were Rudolph (pr. Jr.). George, “Dietrich”, and John. Dietrich was listed as a son of Rudolph on a Burnetsfield land lease dated 13 Sep 1765, was the Lt. Tiederich Steel in 1767 FG militia and at Oriskany in 1777. Pr. Also the “Fiedrick Steale” who had 6 adults & 5 children on 1778 GR relief. The Baker manuscript has his children as Ruloph (oldest), second son George (m. Dor. Shoemaker), then Gertrude (m. George Dygert), John (m. Catherine), and Nicholas (m. Eva Meyer). Dietrich Stale was listed on the 1790 German Flats census (4-0-2), presumably his household consisting then of adult unmarried sons Dietrich, John, & Nicholas, The 1796 will of Dietrich Stehl of German Flats mentions wife living (but not named), sons Rudolph (oldest), Dietrich (received lot #8), John & Nicholas, and daughters Gertrude & Catherine (now “Dygert”). The younger sons John & Nicholas were designated to receive Burnetsfield lot #7 which Dietrich had purchased from Nicholas Harter (Harter book page 130).
