DANNEBROG -- Donald Hochstetler, 71, died Wednesday (Sept. 25, 2002) at the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in Omaha.
He was born Dec. 31, 1930, to Ezra and Sadie Roth Hochstetler at Wood River.
He received his education at Wood River. As a young man, he was employed at Cate's Tire in Grand Island.
He joined the U.S. Army Aug. 6, 1951, and served in the Korean Conflict. He was discharged June 12, 1953. He then worked in Colorado Springs, Colo., until 1954, when he returned to Nebraska and worked at the Tuma Garage in Elba. In 1955, he started a blacksmith shop and mechanic garage in Dannebrog.
On April 1, 1956, he married Janice Barnes in Elba. The couple made their home in Dannebrog where he continued his blacksmith and mechanic business. Later he was employed for H & M Construction of Hastings working in the construction of irrigation canals for Sherman Dam at Farwell and Merritt Dam near Ainsworth. He then returned to his business in Dannebrog.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dannebrog and the Dannebrog Fire Department.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mary Asher; and two brothers, Maynard and Lester Hochstetler.
Survivors include his wife, Janice of Dannebrog; two sons, Michael Hochstetler of Dannebrog and Timothy Hochstetler and wife, Michelle of Wallace; two daughters, Lisa Kress of Crab Orchard, and Jana Hochstetler of McCook; one sister, Doris and husband, Leo Kroll of Grand Island; one brother, Roy Hochstetler and wife, Doris of Cairo; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Monday, 10 a.m., at the First Baptist Family Center in Dannebrog with the Rev. Barry Arndt officiating. Burial will be in the Elba Cemetery with military honors by the Mickelsen-Larkowski American Legion Post No. 241 of Dannebrog.
Visitation will be Sunday, 4-8 p.m., at the funeral home. Memorials may be given in his name.
