Loving wife of Floyd R Cain whom she married in 1924. Devoted Mother to Paul Bob and Nancy. Marie was born in Lazerfeld, Hungary,the daughter of Franz and Christina Ackerman BARTL. Her family later moved to nearby Rudolfsgnad. Mama Maria was 14 when she arrived aboard the ship "Pennsylvania" in 1913, through the Port of New York and Ellis Island. She was accompanied by her father, Franz Bartel,an uncle Conrad and a brother, Peter. They traveled on to Chicago where they were sponsored by a Wilhelm Bartel. Mama worked as a domestic and then moved to Detroit, Michigan where she was hired to work in the Wayne County Sheriffs office. She eventually became matron of the jail. It is while working there that she met her future husband.
She didn't have much formal education but I remember her telling me that as a young girl she spoke three languages, German, Hungarian and probably Serbian. She often said she was a graduate of the "school of hard knocks". She was a flapper in the 20's, lived through the depression of the 30's, two World Wars and lived to see man walk on the moon.

When she turned 40 she became the adopted mother of three orphan children whom she helped raise as if they were her own. At the end of WWII they moved to Kansas where the family settled on a farm and in this area she spent the rest of her life.

She was a hard worker and on the farm she did "mens" work, rising early to help with outside chores and then cook a full breakfast and then bake a pie or two, all before I even left for school. Mama had a great sense of humor, she loved to cook and she made wonderful dishes and enjoyed having friends over for meals. She collected recipes from everyone she knew or met. After her death I found a recipe, dated 1918, written in her handwriting while she was still single, for making lye soap. In later years she always kept busy doing something. She made ceramics, crochet, afghans, candles and small crafts. She loved to travel and often said her middle name should be "gypsy". After the death of her husband, she traveled with friends to most of the western and southwestern states as well as Alaska and Canada. She also visited New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois as well as Florida and Louisana.
She always planted lots of flowers, she especially loved pansies and roses. Her favorite colors were brown and yellow. She made the best pies,cookies and donuts.
The love of her life, besides her husband, was her granddaughters whom she adored. She was in her seventies when her youngest granddaughter was born and she would say that she lived for her and in deed she did live to be almost 92 years of age, 32 of those years as a widow. She was one in a million and I was so very fortunate to have her as a mother. Mom, I sure do miss you.

One of Mama's favorite songs, I remember her going around in
the house singing it. It was sung at her funeral:
I
In The Garden

I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses.

And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

He speaks, and the sound of His voice,
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing,
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing.

And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.

I'd stay in the garden with Him
Though the night around me be falling,
But He bids me go; through the voice of woe
His voice to me is calling.

And He walks with me, and He talks with me,
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known.
