Mearl Carl Drager recently celebrated his 96th birthday while a resident of Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center. He was born June 30, 1910 in Jay Township, Martin County, Minnesota, the eldest son of Herman and Johanna (Roenfeldt) Drager. Mearl attended country school. He was baptized in the Federated Church in Sherburn and confirmed in 1932, following his marriage at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sherburn. He continued to be a member until his death. He was united in marriage to Dora (Dottie) Johanna Hilken on September 12, 1929 in Fairmont, Minnesota. After their marriage they farmed in the Sherburn, Welcome, and Mt. Lake areas until moving to Sherburn in 1942. Mearl was employed with the harness shop, Kark Milling Company, Yurcek Hardware Store, Stoterau Hardware Store and Interstate Power Company until his retirement in 1975. Mearl was very active in baseball as a player, manager of the Sherburn Town Team, and umpiring for many years. He belonged to the Iowa Umpires Association. Mearl received a diploma from the Berry School of Horsemanship and was a member of the Fairmont Saddle Club. Mearl was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Sherburn. Following the death of his wife in 1988, he made his home with his daughter, Phyllis Arndt in Welcome.

Mearl died on Wednesday evening, July 12, 2006 at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont, Minnesota at the age of ninety-six years.

Survivors include his daughter, Phyllis Arndt of Welcome, Minnesota; grandchildren, Barry Loos and his wife, Bev, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Mark Loos of Springfield, Missouri and Gayle Cook of Albert Lea, Minnesota; five great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren;sister-in-law, Maxine Drager of Sherburn, Minnesota and well as numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Mearl was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Dottie, daughter, Janet Loos, sons-in-law, Marland Arndt and Robert Loos, two sets of twin siblings, three brothers and one sister and other relatives.
