MARSHALL, Ill. — James W. Allen, 85, of Marshall, died at 9:40 a.m. Sunday, July 16, 2006, in his residence, following an extended illness. He retired from the former Velsicol Chemical Corp. He was born Nov. 6, 1920, in Cates, Ind., to Riley Allen and Mamie Lamoine Asken Allen. He married Waneta J. Beadling on Sept. 15, 1946, in West Terre Haute, Ind.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, James Allen and wife Judith of Naperville, John Allen and wife Chris of Findlay, Ohio, and Joseph Allen of North Aurora; two daughters, Jeanne Setzer and husband Mark of Marshall, and Julie Lacy and husband Brad of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren, Amanda Allen, Emily Allen, Tracy Allen, Stacy Fry, Lacy Allen, Josh Setzer, Jody Green and Lucas Setzer; five great-grandchildren, Reese Fry, Rhett Fry, Ehlena Fry, Jocelyn Green and Jonathan Green; a sister, Lurlynne Goekler of Marshall; a brother, Samuel Riley Allen of Covington; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Rovene Blizzard and Alice Barkley; and a brother, Lewis Vernell Allen.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, as a pilot who flew an unarmed Cub over enemy lines to spot fire for the artillery. An encounter of his heroism during a mission was featured in the Stars and Stripes. He was discharged with the rank of lieutenant. He was a member of Clark County Post 90 American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5975, both in Marshall. He also was a member and past master of Marshall Lodge 133 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, and had served as secretary for Local 7-641 for several years. He was a 1938 graduate of Marshall High School.

Services are 1:30 p.m. CDT Wednesday in Pearce Funeral Home, with Warren Allen officiating. Burial is in Marshall Cemetery, with graveside military rites conducted by American Legion Post 90, and VFW Post 5975.
