Mr. J. Van Boyles Jr., 83, resident of High Point, passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2015. Born in Richmond, VA, December 31, 1931, he was the son of the late J. Van Boyles Sr. and Helen Warriner Boyles. He graduated from High Point High School in 1950 and went on to graduate from N.C. State University in 1954 with a B.S. degree in Textile Chemistry. Prior to graduation from N.C. State, Boyles married Barbara Jean Steele of High Point.
Mr. Boyles joined the Army in 1955, was assigned to the Chemical Corps stationed at Ft. McClellan, AL, and attained the rank of second lieutenant by July of that year. He was then assigned to the First Radiological Safety Support Unit and transferred to Los Alamos, New Mexico, for training in the measuring and detection of radioactive fallout. From there he went to the Pacific proving grounds, specifically the islands of Eniwetok and Bikini. There, he witnessed the results of Operation Redwing, the massive testing of America’s nuclear weapons in 1956. Mr. Boyles was Radiological Safety Director for the project sponsored by the Atomic Energy Commission. He remained working for the AEC until his tour of duty was completed in 1957.
Following his stint in the Army, Mr. Boyles came back to High Point and in 1959, he established Boyles Furniture Company with his uncle, the late L.E. Boyles, and first cousin, the late L.E. Boyles, Jr. In October of 1961, the 325th Chemical Depot Company was reactivated with Mr. Boyles as captain. They were ordered to report to Ft. McClellan, AL, on October 7, 1961, and they remained in active duty until August 4, 1962. Mr. Boyles was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for outstanding work.
He was honored as “High Pointer of the Week” in August, 1962, and was serving as Radiological Safety Director for the city of High Point at that time. Prior to his death, Mr. Boyles was retired from many years of success working in the furniture manufacturing business and in commercial real estate.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Barbara Steele Boyles, his daughter, Dara Boyles Inman of High Point, his son, J. Van Boyles III of Schoharie, New York, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Floral Garden Park Cemetery.
