Florence Burnett, Oldest Member of Baker Church

Florence E. Burnett, who is believed to have been the oldest living member of Baker Memorial Methodist Church, died Oct. 21, 2004 in Beechwood Nursing Home in Getzville. She was 101.

A lifelong resident of East Aurora prior to her move to Beechwood in 1996, Mrs. Burnett was born Oct 22, 1902 on the S. M. Clement summer estate on Mill Road in East Aurora. She was the daughter of James and Bertha McCumber Edwards and the sister of the Ruby Edwards Taylor, all deceased.

The former Florence Edwards joined Baker Memorial Church in 1914 and taught school in District 4, Town of Aurora from 1920 to 1927, when she married Almon W. Burnett of Orchard Park. After the death of her parents in 1930 and 1931, the couple returned to their Center Street residence and raised their family, residing there until 1990. Mr. Burnett died in 1993.

Mrs. Burnett is survived by four daughters, Barbara (late Richard) Mathews of East Aurora, Phyllis (Clayton) Snyder of Depew, Carol (Richard) Minsker of Baldwinsville, and Beverley (George) Bellaire of East Aurora; one daughter-in-law, Mary (late Everett) Burnett; 13 grandchildren; 23-great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Burnett was predeceased by her son Everett and two daughters, Ruby (late Donald) Plack and Betty Joyce Burnett.

Rev. John Cooke officiated at a funeral service held Oct. 25, 2004 at Baker Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment in Oakwood Cemetery was private. Arrangements were handled by Kenneth Howe Funeral Home in East Aurora.
