CONNERSVILLE Narvel W. "Bud" Selke, 82, 2213 Iowa Ave., died Friday, Feb. 3 at Reid Hospital where he had been a patient since Jan. 28. He was born March 10, 1912 to Leo Cort and Mary Magdellan Fern Selke in Cincinnati. He had resided most of his life in Connersville. He had worked at McQuay-Norris, American Central, and the H.H. Robertson for 26 years, retiring in 1976. He also had owned and operated Selke's Restaurant from 1952 to 1959. He was a life member of the Richmond Musician's Association, a 50-year member of Warren Lodge No. 15, a member of Maxwell Chapter No. 18, Council and Commandery No. 6, Murat Temple of Indianapolis, Whitewater Shrine Club, BPO Elks Club No. 379, and the Calvary Baptist Church. A drummer since the age of 16, Selke was a well known area musician. He had played with the American Cosmopolitan Band during World War II. They played many benefits to promote the sale of war bonds. Later he played with the Chuck Galloway Combo, Art Siler Combo, BB Trio, and his band the Good Times Jazz Band. With that band, after retirement, he and some of the members volunteered at many engagements at the local nursing homes and the Fayette County Senior Citizens Center. Survivors include three sons, Narvel T. "Buddy" Selke of Colorado Springs, Colo., Nolen Selke of Connersville, and Nevin Selke of Jacksonville, Fla.; stepchildren, Harry Shields of Greenville, Ohio, and Marie Leedke of Hamilton, Ohio; two brothers, Carl J. "Barney" and Albert Selke, both of Connersville; one sister, Bernice Hill of Connersville; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren; seven step-great-granchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Geraldine Lawrence Selke and his second wife, Geneva Helms Shields Selke; and one brother, Leroy. Service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6 at the Showalter-Blackwell Funeral Home, Myers Chapel with Rev. Willie Weaver officiating. Burial will be in Dale Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital.
