Dorothea Maye Dickey Abernathy was born January 21, 1927.

She left to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on February 7, 2015.

Dorothy was born to Erva and Emery Dickey in Mystic, Iowa.

There she lived on a farm with her brothers Harry, Ronnie, and Don and her sister Evelyn. She often reminisced about a simpler life. She always missed that small community and of living her life on the farm.

She met Albert Abernathy and married in Chicago, Illinois. She always said that adjusting to the big city life was hard, but with Albert being stationed there, they soon made Chicago their home.

Dorothy became a registered nurse during her time there. She began her career shortly after Albert's discharge from the Army. Her most memorable time of her career was doing house calls with the only doctor in town as they lived in the country. They also owned a nursing home with Albert's parents and was always fortunate to take her three older children to work every day.

With Albert's jobs always taking him to other places they lived in Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana and Michigan before settling in Houston in the late 1950's.

Dorothy and Albert were married 53 years before he passed away. They had four children Gwen, Jim, Bill, and Debbie.

Dorothy is survived by her only living child Debbie and her husband, Lynn, two very special daughter-in-laws Kathy Abernathy, and Jo Abernathy. Grandchildren, Kim and Mark Jackson, Jonica and Ruben Medel, Amon and Candace Boswell, Ryan Abernathy, Jennifer Abernathy, Allison and Perry Weaver, and Brian Husband. Great grandchildren, Taylor Jackson, Hillary and Josh Prenada, Olivia Medel, Kaitlin Boswell, Lauren and Zachory Boswell, Tucker, Austin, Peyton, and Dylan Abernathy, Eliott and Milo Weaver.

Preceded in death by her husband Albert, daughter Gwendolyn Lott, son Jim Abernathy, son Bill Abernathy and grandson David Boswell, parents Erva and Emery Dickey brothers Harry, Ronnie and Don, sister Evelyn Pearson, and niece Sandy.

A very special thank you is extended by the family to all of the staff at Legend Oaks East for the wonderful care, compassion and friendship they received during her stay there.
