Betty attended Carr Junior High School where she met her future husband, Bill, before graduating from Durham High School in 1946. After graduation, she considered enrolling at Duke University, but instead decided to continue her employment at Retail Credit Company. In 1947, she was employed by Home Security Life Insurance Company, which later became Peoples Security Life.
She completed her career there earning the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation before retiring in 1988 as Assistant Vice-President of New Business Underwriting.
Betty loved reading and playing Bridge with her friends. She also enjoyed traveling which was highlighted by trips to London, Hawaii, and three trips to the Masters Golf Tournament.
She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Outback Sunday school class and was a longtime member of Willowhaven Country Club. She and Bill spent most of their retirement years at Ocean Isle Beach and were also able to attend three Final Fours in support of Duke Basketball.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Bill King; and her parents, Tipton and Pearl Sutton.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2015 in the Howerton & Bryan Funeral Chapel with visitation one hour prior to the service.
Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1320 Umstead Road, Durham, North Carolina 27712, or to the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565.
