Faye Marie Taylor, 84, of Fort Smith, Arkansas died Thursday, June 24, 2004, in a local nursing home. She was a lifelong member of the Van Buren First Baptist Church. She taught the Joy Sunday school class for many years, and the members were her dearest friends and were a great joy to her. She was born in Van Buren, Arkansas, September 22, 1919, to Hiram and Mattie Taylor. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Roy, Raymond, Clyde and Ted Taylor Sr.

Faye Marie graduated from Quachita Baptist University in 1939 at the age of 19, and began her teaching career in Sparkman, Arkansas. She returned home and taught in Van Buren and at the Fort Smith High School. She taught history and then received her master's degree from the University of Arkansas. She became a counselor at Northside High School (Fort Smith). After further education, she became the first educational examiner for the Fort Smith School System. She retired after 42 years of service. She was honored with the Spirit of the Frontier award by the City of Fort Smith in 2000. After her retirement, she traveled throughout the world.

Funeral was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 26, 2004, at Ocker memorial Chapel with burial at Fairview Cemetery in Van Buren under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.

She is survived by nieces, Suzanne Hill of Alma and Clynell McPhearson of Kingston Springs, Tenn; nephews, Ted Taylor of Fort Smith and Jim Taylor of Fall Branch, Tenn; sisters-in-law Mary Taylor of Greenville , Tenn, and Ruth Taylor of Fort Smith.

Pallbearers were Gary Suris, Ron Coker, Kenneth Rains, Ted Taylor, Jim Taylor and Hill Alexander. Honorary pallbearers were the Joy Sunday School class of Van Buren First Baptist Church. The family visited with friends at 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, 700 Jefferson, Van Buren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Van Buren First Baptist Church Building Fund, 1121 E. Main Street, Van Buren, AR 72956.
