"A veteran of the war between the states, Charles H. Backus, soon after the close of the war, sought wider fields of operation and came to Kansas, homesteading in Butler Co. In later years he retired from life, and moving to Winfield, there rounded out his career. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church, and earnest workers in that fold. All of the four children born to them are still living , and one of them is Thomas W. Backus." (from History of Kansas, volume IV,1928, page 2097)
