Uriel was the first-born son of William and Elizabeth Dews Burroughs, who married in Fauquier County, Virginia, October 26, 1797. The Burroughs Family were part of the massive human migration into the Commonwealth of Virginia (later Kentucky) before the turn of the nineteenth century. The Burroughs first settled in what is now Scott County, Kentucky, near Georgetown. After his father's premature death, Uriel brought his widowed mother and several siblings to settle in Indiana. The family traveled first to Wayne County, where his mother married to widower Henry Beck in 1825. Uriel settled west of Shannondale in Montgomery County, Indiana, before 1828.
